Taking my mobile phone to bed with me has been a habit for many years. Whilst lying in bed I normally scroll through messages, play games, look at social media and read the news. Not only that but when I wake up, I would reach for my phone to do the same things as I did just before I went to sleep.
Instead of sleeping, I would waste time on my phone. Instead of getting on with my morning, I would again waste time on my phone. It got to the point where if I were to wake up at night for any reason, I would reach for my phone to just quickly look at any messages that may have come through.
Recently I read about negative effects the blue light emitted by mobile phones has on a person’s sleep cycle. Blue light affects body’s ability to prepare for sleep, resulting in difficulty falling asleep and subsequently waking up.
I decided to illuminate mobile phone time before bed to check whether my sleep quality would improve. I have always had very poor sleep quality and being a very light sleeper just added to the problem.
As it happens, having completed the 30 days I still do not bring my phone in the bedroom with me before bed. I do not feel like it has much importance in my life before bedtime anymore. More on that and my other findings below.
Week 1
My first obstacle was to ascertain how I will use my alarm to wake me in the morning, which I have been using on my phone all this time. So, I decided to go out and buy a freestanding alarm clock.
I bought a Precision alarm clock from Amazon click here. It is a good little gadget. The clock automatically updates via a radio signal plus the alarm clock is easy to set. It looks stylish and has a bonus feature of displaying room temperature.
During the first few days whenever I was getting into bed, I automatically reached out for my phone by my bedside table. Well, this time it was not there. It felt like my hands were on autopilot to reach out for my phone.
During the first week lying in bed was a little boring. I had nothing else to do other than sleep. So, I would lay and stare into nothing, missing the endless scrolling I did prior to sleeping.
Week 2
Surprisingly mornings were not that difficult to manage without reading through endless rubbish on my phone in bed. I would just lay in bed and mentally prepare myself for the day ahead. It was rather nice to wake up and not worry about someone else’s problems.
I would normally check my phone once I was up and out of my bedroom. Annoyingly most of the time it would be nearly out of charge, as for some reason I did not move the charger from my bedroom to charge it overnight.
Week 3
I was now enjoying my time in bed before sleep. I started to notice that I have been falling asleep much faster. I guess because I was no longer wasting time in bed on my phone.
Night-time felt more peaceful and more relaxing when my phone and all the nonsense that comes with it were in another room. I did not have to think about anything going on in the world. I did however forget to set my alarm few times, but thankfully my body clock always woke me up in time.
Week 4
At this stage I felt like my sleep quality improved. By now I was falling asleep fast, I was staying asleep, I was sleeping deeper and I was waking up earlier. Although the quality of my dreams did not improve.
I have had few urges to still bring my phone in the bedroom, but I got over them quickly. I think the next step would be to illuminate mobile phone usage an hour or two before bed as there is always room for improvement.
