In the UK there are various categories of motorcycle licences obtainable depending on an individual’s age. This post sets out a route to obtaining a highest category, Category A, motorcycle licence.
Category A motorcycle licence allows a person to ride a motorcycle of any power without restrictions. If you are at least 24 years of age without previous motorcycle licence held in the lower categories, you can obtain a Category A motorcycle licence via a Direct Access (DAS) route.
As part of qualifying via the DAS route, you will need to pass Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), motorcycle theory and practical tests.
STEP 1 – Motorcycle Theory Test
You must pass a motorcycle theory test. This test consists of 2 parts: Multiple Choice Questions; and Hazard Perception. Your pass certificate will be valid for 2 years.
On the day when you attend a test centre, the test is taken on the computer and takes around 1.5 hours. During the first part of the test you will get a set of multiple questions to answer. Whilst during the second part of the test you will be shown video clips where you will have to spot hazards.
Prior to the test I purchased a CD version of the test on Amazon click here, so that I could practice before taking the test.
STEP 2 – Compulsory Basic Training
CBT is a one day training course designed to teach you the basic skills required to ride safely on the road. You will cover 5 modules on the day: Introduction; Practical On-Site Training; On-Site Riding; On-Road Training Preparation; and On-Road Riding. Once you have passed the CBT you will be given a certificate, which will be valid for 2 years.
On the day, when you arrive at the test centre you will be given a 125CC motorcycle to practice on. First part of the training takes place on site, during which you will be taught how to operate and ride a motorcycle. Second part of the training will be on the road during which you will be able to practice road riding with an instructor.
Once you obtain your CBT certificate you can ride a motorcycle up to 125CC on the road unaccompanied. However, you must display “L” plates at the front and rear of your motorcycle, and you must not carry a pillion passenger or ride on motorways.
When I obtained my CBT certificate, I purchased a 125CC motorcycle, which I practiced riding before I took my motorcycle practical test.
STEP 3 – Motorcycle Practical Test
Before you take the practical test, you must undergo motorcycle practical training through a training provider. Training normally takes 5 half days and you will be given a 600CC motorcycle to practice on. Training is undertaken on site and on road with your instructor and you will take the same motorcycle to your practical test.
The practical test comes in two parts: Module One; and Module Two. The first one is an off road test which takes around 20 minutes and is conducted in a test centre. You will be required to perform various manoeuvres including: wheeling the motorcycle into a parking space, doing a slalom and a figure of eight; a slow ride; a U-turn; a controlled stop; and an emergency stop and hazard avoidance. Once you pass this test you can proceed to book the second one.
As part of Module Two you will be required on another day to ride on the road for around 50 minutes. It will also include an examiner asking you some motorcycle safety questions. You will then proceed to ride on the road which will include: stopping; an angle start and a hill start. As part of the test you will be asked to do 10 minutes of independent riding, whereby you will have to follow a series of directions given by your examiner who will be riding behind you.
Once you pass Module Two you will get a full motorcycle licence by the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency.
