Why I opted to get my second rhinoplasty
About 2 years after my first rhinoplasty when my nose fully healed, I realised that I did not like certain aspects of it. I felt the nostrils were not even, the tip was overhanging and the bridge had a bump. Although I myself noticed all these imperfections, they were still not visible to other people. So I contacted my original surgeon to find out how I can undergo a corrective surgery. Corrective surgery is normal after a first rhinoplasty as one cannot control how a nose would heal. Upon visiting him for a consultation he advised me that it is a straightforward procedure and I made an appointment for the following week.
My rhinoplasty experience under local anesthesia
My first rhinoplasty was carried out under general anesthesia, where is this one I was advised by the surgeon would be carried out under local anesthesia. I was advised that this is because a corrective procedure is not very invasive. So once I changed into a gown I walked myself into the operating room. Whilst on the operating table my eyes were covered and a local anesthetic injected.
Injections to numb my nose were injected inside and outside of my nose. I never felt pain like it before. I was screaming and crying from the pain. When my nose was numb the surgeon corrected the bits I did not like. During the procedure I was in horror that at some point anesthetic will wear off and I will feel the pain of the procedure. When my nostrils were being stitched up, the anesthetic started to wear off. I felt the pain of stitching. However, the pain of injecting the anesthetic was so unbearable that I did not want to experience it again. So I opted to tolerate the pain of stitches instead.
Once the procedure was complete, nose packing and a cast were put on my nose again and I had to go through the same aftercare process as I described in my first post. Although on this occasion I did fly back to the UK soon after and took my cast off in a hospital there. Whenever anyone asked me how my procedure went, I would burst into tears as I remembered the pain I went through as part of administering local anesthetic. Since, I avoid all procedures requiring local anesthesia as I now have fear it will hurt just as much.
Having had two rhinoplasties, I would recommend this procedure if you are unhappy with your nose. My top tips would be to choose your surgeon well, by looking at his/her past work. Also do not have it under local anesthesia, as that hurts a lot.
