I used to think veganism is a trend some people follow to appear cool. Later on I realised that is not exactly true.
What does it mean to be a vegan?
- The term “vegan” was created in 1944 by a small group of vegetarians who formed the Vegan Society.
- Veganism is a way of living which excludes all forms of animal exploitation and cruelty.
- Ethically vegans believe that all creatures have the right to life and freedom.
- Veganism is a choice for its health benefits on a human body via illumination of seafood, meat and dairy.
- They avoid animal products due to the negative environmental impact caused by fishing and farming.
- Vegans eat plant based foods including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds.
- They do not use any products which contain animal derived ingredients or undergo animal testing.
What was I like before being a vegan?
I used to eat meat, fish, cheese and everything animal derived. I used to love seafood sushi and cappuccino with full fat cow milk. I never cared whether any personal care products I used were tested on animals. I did not even know that some household products contain animal derived ingredients. My thought process was that animals exist for humans’ benefit.
How did I decide to become a vegan?
My journey started when I bought a kitten. I never thought of myself as someone who would get one, as I used to think pets are just an unnecessary financial burden and dirty. Yet working from home during lockdown became a bit lonely and I, like many other people at the time decided to unexpectedly get a pet.
As soon as I got a kitten my view about pets and animals in general changed. My kitten became my best friend who could do no wrong and no expense was spared on him. From then on is when I stopped using any products tested on animals. I imagined how horrible it would be if someone was testing a new lipstick on my kitten, putting him through terrible pain and suffering in the process. Therefore, my money will not go to any company which subject poor animals to captivity and pain for profit.
However, I still continued to eat animal produce. I felt like I was contributing in some way towards reducing animal cruelty at least by using cruelty free products. I could not give up seafood sushi and I always hated eating vegetables in general. My view was that as a vegan I would have no clue what to cook other than a salad, and cucumber sushi did not sound appealing.
One day I watched on Netflix a documentary called Seasperacy and that was the day when everything changed. It was a very emotional documentary about how seafood is obtained prior to hitting supermarket shelves. When I saw the number of dolphins and whales killed in the processes of fishing, I felt very emotional. It also covered the negative health effects like mercury poisoning which eating fish has on a human body. After seeing this very graphic documentary it put me off eating seafood and at that point cucumber sushi did not sound so bad.
I then went on to watch a similar documentary called Cowspiracy. I learnt through it the pain and suffering farm animals go through during dairy and meat production. It also opened my eyes to the negative health impact eating meat and dairy has on human body. One shocking fact I learnt was how badly animal agriculture effects the environment and wildlife.
At the time I had some health issues and I thought I do not want to continue eating animal produce and make myself worse. Nor did I want to develop new health conditions associated with meat, fish and dairy consumption. Ethically I could no longer contribute to pain and suffering animals go through during fishing and farming, so that I could fill my belly. Nor could I continue to contribute to the terrible effects animal agriculture and mass fishing has on other wildlife.
What benefits have a derived from being a vegan?
- My conscious is clear knowing I am not contributing to animal captivity and suffering.
- I am not contributing to destruction of wildlife for the purposes of animal agriculture.
- I am not contributing to death of millions of land and sea animals.
- My diet is clean and healthy as I get my nutrients first hand from plant based food.
- Likelihood of me developing illnesses related to consumption of animal produce is illuminated.
- I am a donor to various animal rescue charities contributing to bettering animal lives.
- I support businesses which use alternatives to animal testing by buying cruelty free products.
- Reducing demand for animal derived food, I contribute positively towards bettering the environment.
- By being a vegan, it is estimated that I save one animal’s life a day.
