1. THEY WILL WAKE YOU UP AT ALL HOURS OF THE NIGHT
When I got my kitten, he was 2 months old. He was very small so used to get under the sofa at night and get stuck there. He would then cry for help and wake me. I had to go downstairs to rescue him each time and this continued until he grew up. No matter how I tried to barricade the gaps at the bottom of the sofa, he would still manage to get under.
He was not allowed to sleep in the bedroom with me as he was very active at night. As I am a light sleeper him running around the bedroom would wake me. So, I had to teach him that he must sleep in his bed downstairs during the night. He would sit and cry behind my bedroom door hoping I open it. This would last for few minutes every night, until he got used to the idea and knew to go to bed once I shut my bedroom door.
When he was a bit bigger, he decided that he will wake up early morning. So, he would sit behind the bedroom door and cry non-stop until I let him in. He would wake up earlier and earlier as the days went on. I tried to ignore him a number of times but he would never stop until I would let him in.
2. YOU NEED TO HAZARD PROOF YOUR HOME
When he was small he would get under the kitchen cabinets and get stuck there, so I had to rescue him from behind them. He also tried to get inside the toilet a few times, so the toilet seat lid had to always be shut.
Kittens have no sense of danger as they are very curious. So all sharp objects like knifes and scissors should be hidden away. Also any heavy objects that may fall on them if they try to climb them should be put away. For example, my kitten tried to climb a large plant pot and a laundry drying rack which ended up falling on him.
Hob is probably the biggest hazard when you have a kitten. I had an electric hob and my kitten jumped on it, as he was clueless that it was hot. He badly burnt his paws and was in a lot of pain. So, either the kitchen should be off limits when the hob is on or cooling down, or an induction hob should be used. I changed to an induction hob, because it cools down as soon as pans are off and thus would never cause any burns to paws. Also, any hot pots and pans should be away from a kitten’s reach.
3. THEY WILL RUIN YOUR FURNITURE AND CLOTHES
Kittens love to climb and explore their surroundings. My kitten climbed all over the house whether it was a leather sofa or a textile bed. He ruined my very expensive leather sofa with his claws. I tried to teach my kitten with voice commands not to climb furniture, but it did not work. My kitten also ruined all my plants as he tried to climb them too.
Although I have a scratching post, my kitten prefers to sharpen his claws and stretch out on the side of my bed. No matter where I moved the scratching post, furniture was still the preferred choice for him.
As kittens are too small to jump to higher surfaces, they will attempt to climb them where possible. When my kitten could not grip certain surfaces with his claws to climb, like the kitchen cabinets, he would attempt to climb up on the countertop via my legs. He ruined a lot of my jeans with his attempts to climb up them. Some clothing accessories like buttons are very attractive to them too. My kitten would try to grab the buttons on my shirts and attempt to rip them off.
4. YOU WILL NEED TO MONITOR THEM OUTSIDE
When I started letting my kitten outdoors, my stress levels significantly went up. Initially I tried getting him used to the outdoors by taking him out on a lead. Then I installed a cat flap and taught him how to use it. When he started to go outdoors, that is when all the problems began. I was constantly monitoring his whereabouts outside to ensure he was okay.
He would run on to the road in front of passing by vehicles. Once he caused a traffic jam as he run under a passing car, so it had to stop resulting in other cars stopping too. Drivers tried to retrieve him but thankfully I came to the rescue. He would also sit under the parked cars, which was dangerous as a driver could drive on and miss that he is under.
My kitten’s curiosity meant that he went up to strangers, dogs, cats, birds and anything that moves. I was very concerned that he might get stolen or a dog would bite him. He did get bitten by a cat once, which caused him a lot of pain. At some point he even jumped into the back of a delivery van, so someone spotted him and got him out. He could have been driven miles away.
5. THEY WILL PAINFULLY SCRATCH AND BITE YOU
Kittens have very sharp claws and teeth. Initially when my kitten was tiny, I would let him play with my hands. At that point I found it cute and his biting and scratching did not hurt at all. Well little did I know that I was getting him used to a very bad habit. His teeth and claws became sharper with age and it would hurt a lot when he would bite and scratch my hands.
Play time was no longer fun as he would just pounce on my hands as if they were prey. On many occasions my hands were bleeding. Also, he bit my nose or chin if my face was near his and tried to pounce with his claws on my hair to bite it.
As I got him into this habit, there was no way of getting him out of it anymore no matter how much I tried. This is why all literature states not to let a kitten play with your hands. This is another reason why I do not let him sleep in my bedroom, as I worry he might scratch my face. He once even tried to catch my eyelashes with his claws, which nearly resulted in an injury to my eye.
